Necklace Layering 101
Hot trend alert! layering necklaces. Guess what-- it’s easy! I have some ideas and helpful hints for you.
My two major tips:
Choose necklaces of different lengths.
Choose necklaces with different types of chain (this means chain thickness, style, color, or not a chain at all!)
LENGTH:
The most common necklace lengths are 16”, 18”, and 20”, and chokers are usually 14” long. I recommend at least a 4” difference between necklace lengths while layering. That means pair a 14” length with an 18” length; or a 16” with a 20”. I do both of those combos here. This helps visually separate the layers, but also reduces necklace tangling!
NECKLACE TYPE:
Mixing and matching necklace type or chain style is a great way to add depth and cohesion to necklace layering. For example, use two different chain styles. The yucca necklace is a simple, small cable style chain and pairs well with both the large chain-link necklace or the “long-short” chain style of the fruit necklace.
Try pairing chain necklaces with non-chain necklaces. For example, I paired longer chain necklaces (the yucca necklace and the leaf necklace) with collar style chokers (the mounds choker and the ninlil collar). You can also think about about mixing pieces with different pendant sizes.
Another way to think about it is to mix a pendant style necklace with a non-pendant texture layer necklace. The chain link choker is a good example of what I mean by “texture layer”-- in other words, there isn’t a pendant serving as a central focal point. Experiment with a beaded necklace as the texture layer paired with a longer pendant necklace.
I Hope this helps you create and style your own layered necklace look!
