Introducing Sliding Scale Pricing

I am SO excited to offer pricing on a sliding scale for select “essential” jewelry pieces— these are our best selling items that have become part of the Sophie Kissin Jewelry DNA.

The idea to sell my work on a sliding scale occurred to me when I wrote our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement in response to the murder of George Floyd and . I am proud to have moved this idea from “aspirational goal” to “current commitments”. You can read the full statement here.

What is sliding scale pricing?

Sliding scale pricing is a fee system that allows customers of different economic means to purchase at varied prices based on their ability to pay. This a progressive pricing system based on equity, allowing greater access for people of all socio-economic backgrounds to goods and services.

Why sliding scale pricing for jewelry?

I have seen and heard of sliding scale pricing offered in medical and therapy services, but I have not seen frequently offered as an option for many tangible goods, much less handmade, craft, or luxury items.

It has always been my mission to make my work accessible and affordable to a diverse clientele. Part of this desire comes from my personal relationship with money and my deep-rooted scarcity mindset.

Everyone deserves to look and feel good with beautiful, handmade pieces designed and created with intention and sustainability in mind.

How does it work?

The pieces in the SKJ Essential Collection are available at three different price tiers. With this initial roll-out of sliding scale pricing, I am not providing specific guidelines for how to decide which price to pay. Why? Because jewelry is not an essential good like I believe therapy, for example, is. I encourage you to pay what you can, keeping in mind that when you pay more, you are helping others afford a piece they might not have otherwise.

This is a judgement-free zone! Money is an uncomfortable subject, but I want you to feel comfortable paying what you want or are able without worrying what I or anyone else thinks! Your choice is confidential.

In every transaction there is an element of trust. When you buy something, you are trusting that a good or service is worth the value assigned to it. Use your own best judgement when deciding what to pay-- I trust you!

The “what ifs” are swirling in my head, too...

Let’s just see if it works! I understand that “affordability” means something different to everyone, and for many, the lowest tier may still not be within reach. Handmade jewelry is a luxury item. Maybe it doesn’t make sense to do sliding scale pricing for this type of good at all! I am giving it a go because pricing equity aligns with my business philosophy and the values of my ideal customer.
