How to Wear a Bolo Tie, Part I: Transitional Turtlenecks

Bolo ties are versatile, unisex, and fun. They can be worn under a collar like a traditional tie, or as a statement necklace with pretty much anything. I am wearing the Gerald/Geraldine Bolo (available here), named after my grandfather who had a large bolo collection. Brass and genuine leather, entirely handmade by yours truly.

Part I of the bolo series is Transitional Turtlenecks! These looks will keep you stylish and warm during the chilly weeks ahead while we eagerly wait for spring.

LOOK 1: Turtleneck sweater + bolo. I have a few of these classic turtleneck sweaters in my wardrobe-- this one is thrifted. Wear the bolo under the turtleneck fold, or get extra cozy and pull it up to your chin.

LOOK 2: “Faux turtleneck” scarf + bolo. I wear square silk scarves tight around my neck when I think I might get cold, but want to have the option to take it off if I get hot. It’s also a great way to add color and texture to any outfit! I have several thrifted and inherited scarves-- this one was my grandma’s and says “Givenchy”, but I’m pretty sure it’s fake lol. Pop on a basic crewneck, tie your scarf, and tuck the bolo underneath it. Would you like a demo on how to tie a scarf like this? Let me know.

LOOK 3: Layered turtleneck and blazer + bolo. Oversized blazers are so in right now. I thrifted this delightful raspberry wool number-- the thrift stores are full of them, people! The bolo dresses up this look without overdoing it and looking too formal.

And there you have it! I hope you feel inspired to try out some of these bolo looks. Let me know what you think! Leave a comment or send me a photo of you rocking your bolo.
