How to Wear a Bolo Tie, Part II: Tees + Ties
The bolo tie styling guide continues with a casual favorite: the T-shirt. I’m sure you have a drawer full of them: plain white Ts, vintage Ts, graphic Ts, band Ts, nostalgic Ts, etc., etc. The point of this exercise is to prove that you already have an outfit to go with a bolo tie, so put on your favorite TEE and give the TIE a TRY.
Look 1: The Supes Casual Bolo Wearer
Who says just because bolo tie has the word ‘tie’ in it, it has to be fancy? The T-shirt and jeans look is the classic casual and effortless outfit you throw on when you want to look cute, but not like you tried too hard. Well, throwing a bolo tie over that favorite comfy is just the ticket to add a little extra pizazz to the lewk.
A good graphic tee goes a long way. I’m wearing one by my friend, Angelina of Sunroom Goods — I love her graphic design aesthetic! This pink goes so well with the brass bolo.
Look 2: The Full-frontal Western (with a twist)
When you think bolo tie, you probably think Wrangler jeans, cowboy boots, a button-up collared shirt, maybe some fringe, and definitely a ten-gallon hat. Think again! (Though if I had any fringe, you better believe I’d be wearing it!) Okay, so maybe this isn’t a T-shirt, per se, but it is a short-sleeved knit I found amongst T-shirts in the “short-sleeved knit” section at Savers. It’s wool, it’s cozy, and it’s neutral, and it looks great with this fabulous batik vest (also thrifted). So I guess that’s the twist? I have a few good vests I love to throw over T-shirts when I want to add a little je-ne-sais-quoi to my T and jeans. I popped the bolo on and I thought, “This looks pretty good!” And then I saw my hat hanging on the wall and thought, why not take this western look from 0 to 60 in less than a second just by popping that on my head? Full disclosure: you can’t see my feet, but I’m wearing crocs. Haha!!
Look 3: Tee + Tie + Neckerchief
EASY. Basically do look 1, and add your favorite bandana or neckerchief to it and BOOM instant cool. It helps if your T is extra cool: this one is my friend Ari of Quw’utsun’ Made’s collab with Born in the North. Scoop one here.
Did these looks stimulate your fashion brain cells? Inspired to dig through your overflowing T-shirt drawer? I hope so.
