How to Do a Ponytail Hairstyle with Just a Hair Stick

That’s right folks, there are SO many possibilities when it comes to doing your hair with the hair stick (or a hair pin for that matter!). You aren’t just limited to buns, though there is so much versatility in that department. In this hair tutorial, I will show you how to do a simple ponytail updo with a hair stick!

Not gonna lie, this tutorial will take a little practice, but if I can do it, you definitely can too!

In this video, I am using only the prehnite squiggle hair stick, but if you can’t get it, no sweat! You can always cheat and use a hair elastic, and no one will be the wiser! I’ll include steps for the cheat method below.

Here’s the walk-through:

  1. Gather your hair in a ponytail.

  2. Grab a small chunk of hair from the base of your neck, beneath the ponytail. The section of hair should be less than that the amount making up the ponytail, and must long enough to wrap a few times around it. Does that make any sense? I hope so. If not, the video will help explain.

  3. Wrap the separated section of hair around (and around) the ponytail.

  4. Holding the pony in one hand, use the other to insert the hair stick at the edge of the pony where the hair is wrapped around it. You want the stick to go through the wrapped bit! The stick should be pointing directly into your head.

  5. Now slide the stick into the base of your ponytail (where it is wrapped), parallel to your head, staying close to your scalp.

  6. Pop the stick out the other side of the ponytail, coming out of the wrapped portion at the base.

If you are having trouble, just try it with a hair elastic! I won’t tell. Put your hair up in a ponytail using the elastic, then separate a section a hair to wrap around elastic at the base of the ponytail. Once you’ve wrapped it around, tuck the end of the hair into the elastic to secure. Then simply slide the hair stick through the base of your pony!

Let me know what you think of this style! I am using the prehnite squiggle hair stick in size small, but you can also use the stick from the squiggle poke pin, or even experiment with a pencil.
